Abstract
Objectives : We examined the mortality and risk factors of death among discharged psychiatric patients in Korea.

Methods : The subjects consisted of 8,610 patients who admitted for psychiatric disorder in a general hospital located in Seoul, Korea from January 1989 to December 2006. At the end of 2009, mortality risk of discharged psychiatric patients was compared with that of the general population of Korea by calculating standardized mortality ratio (SMR). The Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to analyze risk factors for death in patients.

Results : The total SMR of patients was 2.33 (3.72 for male and 1.60 for female). The diagnostic group showing a significant excess mortality (p£¼0.05) was alcohol use disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorder, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, adjustment disorder, major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder. Risk factors of death in discharged psychiatric patients were male, older age at admission, number of admission, history of suicide attempt, alcohol use disorder, personality disorder, schizophrenia, dysthymic disorder, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion : Discharged psychiatric patients were at high risk for death, suggesting that effective prevention measure is required to reduce mortality of this high risk group.
